PCB Design: 5 Benefits of Using PCB Design Reuse

While PCB Design is being done world wide, this is a field that has been mastered in Silicon Valley, all the way from Palo Alto to San Jose.

But first of all:

what is PCB Design Reuse?

PCB Design Reuse is a design methodology that builds upon existing components of an IC (Integrated Circuit) or PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design by using and preserving those elements and making them available to the design community as library components. These elements are such as intellectual properties (IP) or design constraints, logical or physical circuit descriptions. This would be very similar to what software objects and components are in software design. Like in Open Source Software (OSS), design reuse would prevent duplicating efforts and improving quality (less errors, and a clear checking and troubleshooting reduction). Open Source Software products are found in many different fields, and some companies using “free software” have become public with huge growth. Companies like RedHat or Sun (acquired by Oracle). Also open source is dominant in certain markets of software, for example CMS (web sites) and blogging (this blog right here is made with WordPress). Also in databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL or in other enterprise software applications, such as document capture (Athento, Ephesoft) or in the document management field.

PCB Design reuse can be used in electronic circuit design of any kind. One of the required tools for PCB Design reuse is a hierarchical schematic capture application which basically allows the engineer to define a circuit using both primitive and hierarchical schematic symbols (a primitive symbol would be a resistor or an LS00 gate, as shown in the picture below).

In this article we are going to focus on the advantages of PCB Design Reuse, the most obvious are:

  1. Quality Improvement: As mentioned above, PCB design reuse would leverage existing designs, therefore reducing testing time and creating more stable hardware design components.
  2. Reduce manpower: Proper implementation of PCB design reuse can reduce the manpower required and shorten the design, cycle for a new board design therefore saving money over the goods to be sold, and making them way more price competitive.
  3. Shorter time-to-market: The above mentioned benefits contribute to a faster development of designs. Using already made and proven components is a key factor to reducing development time, therefore providing an edge into having the product out ASAP.
  4. Team Design Benefits: A byproduct of PCB design reuse is team design. The reuse module may be designed concurrently with the board design that will use it.
